While all the major [film festivals](https://www.filmoiselle.com/awards-season-2026-2027-calendar-dates-oscars/) are making us jealous this week, we have prepared recommendations of our own. We have been slightly fond of Shawn Hatosy this week, and of course had to include a scary movie in the rotation. Every week we try to watch and recommend at least one movie in each genre, to widen our and yours palettes. Let’s get started, shall we?

[**Anne Hathaway**](https://www.filmoiselle.com/tag/anne-hathaway/) **and Jessica Chastain in the 60s era? Slightly unhinged film ‘**[**Mothers’ Instinct**](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13397574/?ref=filmoiselle.com)**’ (2024)**

A psychological thriller that grasps you from the first shot. Two best friends, Alice and Celine, live a perfectly normal life in a sixties suburban neighbourhood — immaculate houses, well-behaved children, the kind of domesticity that looks exactly right until it doesn't. Everything is normal until a sudden tragedy strikes one of the families, and what follows is a slow and beautifully constructed unravelling of secrets, manipulation, and paranoia. This one does not rely on plot twists for its tension — it earns it through atmosphere and the particular discomfort of watching two extraordinary actresses play women who cannot trust each other or themselves. If you have any appreciation for the psychological thriller as a genre, this is one of its better recent entries.

**In the mood for splatter horror? ‘**[**Ready or Not**](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7798634/?ref%5F=nv%5Fsr%5Fsrsg%5F0%5Ftt%5F8%5Fnm%5F0%5Fin%5F0%5Fq%5FReady%20or%20Not&ref=filmoiselle.com)**’ 1 & 2 had our attention (2019 & 2025)**

After the news broke that Samara Weaving is joining the [Marvel X-Men Universe](https://www.filmoiselle.com/d23-2026-announcements-disney-marvel-pixar/), it felt like due diligence to spend some time with her earlier work. And since we have also been slightly obsessed with [Shawn Hatosy](https://www.filmoiselle.com/the-pitt-season-3-preview-fan-theories-cast-2026/) this week, this particular movie marathon turned out to be a very convenient two-in-one situation. The premise is exactly as unhinged as it sounds: a bride's wedding night does not go as expected when marrying into a wealthy family turns out to come with its own very specific set of rules and a very high-stakes game of hide-and-seek. Weaving is magnetic — funny and physically committed in a way that makes the horror land harder. Shawn Hatosy plays the terrifying family patriarch in Part 2, and it is now entirely clear why the fandom has been asking for more of him.

**Action award of the week goes to… '**[**The Accountant**](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2140479/?ref=filmoiselle.com)**' (2016)**

Christian Wolf, played by [Ben Affleck](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000255/?ref%5F=fn%5Ft%5F1&ref=filmoiselle.com), has a natural pull toward numbers and considerably less interest in people. As a forensic accountant working for some of the world's most dangerous organisations, his skills are extraordinary and his exposure is significant. When he takes on what appears to be a routine client engagement — reviewing the financial records of a legitimate robotics company — he uncovers something that was never meant to be found. The Accountant is a better film than its premise suggests, anchored by a performance from Affleck that is quieter and more precise than his usual register. Worth your time on a Sunday afternoon.

**Do Classic Novels Need a Remake? '**[**Fahrenheit 451 (2018)**](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0360556/?ref%5F=nv%5Fsr%5Fsrsg%5F0%5Ftt%5F8%5Fnm%5F0%5Fin%5F0%5Fq%5FFahrenheit%20451%20%282018%29&ref=filmoiselle.com)**' Has a Complicated Answer**

Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most adapted novels in literary history — and one of the most difficult to get right, because its power lives in the specific texture of its paranoia, which tends to evaporate when translated too literally to screen. The 2018 HBO adaptation directed by Ramin Bahrani stars [Michael B. Jordan](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0430107/?ref%5F=tt%5Fcst%5Ft%5F1&ref=filmoiselle.com) as Guy Montag, a fireman in a future society where books are illegal and his job is to burn them, and [Michael Shannon](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0788335/?ref%5F=tt%5Fcst%5Ft%5F4&ref=filmoiselle.com) as his captain Beatty, the true believer who understands exactly what he is destroying and chooses destruction anyway. Jordan brings an earnest intensity to Montag's awakening, but it is Shannon who makes the film worth watching — a performance of controlled menace that suggests a man who read everything and decided it changed nothing. The film modernises the surveillance state elements for a social media era, which works better than it should.

**New in theaters: '**[**The Magic Faraway Tree**](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7734244/?ref%5F=nv%5Fsr%5Fsrsg%5F0%5Ftt%5F7%5Fnm%5F1%5Fin%5F0%5Fq%5FThe%20Magic%20Faraway%20Tree&ref=filmoiselle.com)**' (2026)**

Enid Blyton's beloved novel has finally made its way to American cinemas, having already run in the UK. A family relocates to the English countryside and their children discover a magical tree that leads to ever-changing worlds above its canopy — each one with its own rules, its own creatures, and its own particular brand of wonder. The film carries the gentle unhurriedness of the source material, which will either feel like a breath of fresh air or test your patience depending on what you are looking for. The cast alone makes it worth the ticket — Andrew Garfield, Judi Dench, and Nicola Coughlan in a fairy tale is a combination we did not know we needed.
